M.J. “J.” Huggins III, Executive Vice President and Regional President for United Bank, has joined the Board of Directors of Business Development Corporation (BDC).

Huggins has 35 years of commercial and retail banking experience. He assumed his current role in 2020 with the merger of United Bankshares, the Charleston, WV-based parent company of United Bank, and Carolina Financial Corporation, the Charleston, SC-based parent company of CresCom Bank.

Huggins was with CresCom and its predecessor Crescent Bank for 20 years, serving as president of both organizations. He also is a member of the Board of Directors for the South Carolina Bankers Association and an Executive Board Member for the Board of Visitors at the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration at Coastal Carolina.

Huggins began his career at C&S Bank in Atlanta in 1988 and was Senior Vice President at Carolina First Bank in Myrtle Beach from 1994 to 2000. He now oversees a United Bank commercial banking team that includes six market presidents for South Carolina and a portion of North Carolina and a portfolio of approximately $2 billion in commercial loans.

“It’s been a pleasure and privilege to help small businesses achieve their goals in South Carolina as well as communities along the coast of North Carolina for the past 30 years. I’m excited now to help BDC continue to do the same across the Palmetto State,” said Huggins, a graduate of the University of South Carolina at Coastal Carolina and the LSU Graduate School of Banking.

“J. brings to the BDC board extensive experience, vast connections, and keen insight into the challenges that entrepreneurs face in building their businesses. We are so glad to have him on the board and are looking forward to his contribution to BDC’s continued success,” stated Peter G. Shand, BDC President and CEO.
