Sonya M. Ingram, owner of West Columbia-based HandPicked Inc., has joined the Board of Directors of Business Development Corporation (BDC).
In 2014, Ingram worked with BDC to obtain financing to buy the company she helped grow to its current 18 locations in five states. Prior to buying the company, she had been general manager of the popular jewelry and accessories stores since October 2006. Before joining HandPicked, Sonya spent 13 years as a buyer and merchandise allocation planner with Belk.
BDC is a non-bank commercial lending company specializing in the U.S. Small Business Administration's 7(a) loan guaranty program and the State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI). Created by the South Carolina Legislature in 1958 to help foster economic development and job creation, the BDC's board includes many of the state's leading community and commercial bankers.
"The ability to access financing from the SBA through BDC was critical to my being able to purchase the company I had grown to love and helped to grow. I'm excited now to have some role in helping other business owners work with their community lenders to achieve their dreams, as well," Ingram says.
"Sonya Ingram is a perfect example of the kind of innovative, committed entrepreneur that BDC was created to assist. Her perspective and experience will be a valuable addition to the diverse group of bankers and business people who comprise our board," said Edwin O. Lesley, President and CEO of BDC.
